Mucosa Irritation Test
To evaluate the irritating effects of medical devices on the mucosal surface, polar and/or apolar extracts obtained from medical devices are applied as a single dose to one or more of the oral, vaginal, penile, rectal, and other mucosal surfaces of rabbits and the reactions are evaluated. The Mucosa Irritation test is preferred for medical devices that have superficial contact with the mucosa and especially those with a mucosa-mediated external connection. The mucosal area where the irritation test will be applied is determined according to the intended use of the medical device.
